Finetex Technology advancements in the solvent electrospinning process have made electrospun membranes for technical textiles and apparel a reality. Electrospun membranes are 100% fiber-based, with fiber diameters in the range of 50 ~ 500 nanometers depending on process conditions. In addition, the flexibility of the solvent electrospinning process results in excellent control of membrane properties. It is possible to have either hydrophobic or hydrophilic membranes in materials such as PU, PVDF, and nylons. The fibrous nature of electrospun membranes result in high breathability, lighter weights, and a softer less rigid touch compared to conventional membranes on the market. The high breathability and lighter weights are a result of a much higher void volume than conventional materials. Electrospun membranes have >80% void volume compared to approximately 50% for most materials. At a given membrane thickness, the resulting grammages of electrospun membranes are roughly one-half to one-third of standard membranes. Also, the fibrous nature gives a very high degree of drapability and soft touch which decreases the rigidity and stiffness ofthe final textile/membrane composite.
